BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF CHITOSAN METAL COMPLEXES Copper complexes of chitosan (Cu-CTS) having different copper concentrations were prepared by the electrochemical oxidation technique in aqueous-acetic acid medium (a novel method of preparation) without side reactions. The percentage composition of the complexes was found to depend on the time of electrolysis. All the formed complexes were soluble in the preparation medium indicating that they are charged; probably having positive charges. The properties of these complexes have been demonstrated by partial elemental analysis, spectra (Far-IR; FTIR; UV/Visible spectroscopy, XRD, ESR), swelling studies and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA, DTGA). The IR spectra showed that chitosan behaves in two modes: monodentate and bidentate to form complexes with pendant and bridging models. Their formation (1N, 2N, 3N) seems to be simultaneously occurring where the pendant has the priority while the bridging form is more stable and well separated by replacing the copper anode by platinum to form corresponding complexes(1R, 2R, 3R). The pendant form may be probably formed by ion exchange mechanism, while the bridging by chelation. The electronic spectra showed a maximum wavelength at ~ 750 nm (υ ~ 13300 cm-1) in accordance with octahedral structure which supported by ESR spectra. The amorphous structure of chitosan changed on copper complexes as shown from the XRD patterns. The biological evaluation of the prepared complexes on EAC (Erlich Ascites Carcinoma) and Vero cell lines showed that pure chitosan (CTS) and their complexes (1N), (1R), (2R) exhibited an inhibitory effect which reached ~ 82%. On the other hand, the prepared samples (2N), (3N) and (3R) showed inhibitory activity 67-70%. The DNA binding affinity assay justified the possible cytotoxic mechanism by showing that (1N) exhibited the highest binding to DNA than that of pure chitosan and the other complexes.

CHLORPHENOXAMINE HCl IN PURE AND TABLET DOSAGE FORMS Three rapid, simple, precise and sensitive visible spectrophotometric methods (A-C) have been developed for the determination of pipazethate hydrochloride (PZ-HCl) and Chlorphenoxamine hydrochloride (CPA-HCl) in pure and Tablet Dosage Forms. Both methods (A-C) involves the formation of intense yellow ion-association complex between drug(s) and either of picric acid (PA) or phenol red (PR) or chlorophenol red (CPR) reagents followed by extraction with methylene chloride. The ion-associates exhibit absorption maxima at 359, 393 and 405 nm for PZ-HCl and at 357, 388 and 400 nm for CPA-HCl with PA, PR and CPR, respectively. The calibration curves resulting from the measurements of absorbance–concentration relations (at the optimum reaction conditions) of the extracted ion-association complexes are linear over the concentration range 3.05-43.60, 8.72-104.64 and 3.27-49.05 μg/mL for PZ-HCl and 3.40-47.64, 8.51-88.48 and 3.40-40.84 μg/mL for CPAHCl with PA, PR and CPR, respectively. The molar absorptivities and Sandell’s sensitivities of the reaction products were calculated. In methods (A-C) the slope, intercept, correlation coefficient, relative standard deviation (RSD), detection and quantitation limits were also calculated. No interference was observed from common excipients present in pharmaceutical formulations. The results are well compared to those obtained by the reference methods using Students t- and F-tests. Therefore, the present methods are suitable for the drugs determination, as they are accurate and precise to a high extent

الملخص الملخص Flotation, speciation and determination of iron(III) using aluminon in water, real samples and wastes of power stations Aluminon has been investigated for the separation of iron(III) by flotation technique. This reagent formed a 1:1 stable complex in aqueous solution. An intense violet layer is formed after flotation using oleic acid (HOL). A highly selective and sensitive spectrophotometric procedure is proposed for the determination of Fe(III) after overcoming all interferences. Preliminary studies show the possibility of forming a complex with Fe(II) to an extremely low extent. Trials have been carried out to separate Fe(II) and Fe(III) using NH4SCN or NaF. To prevent the oxidation of Fe(II), NaBH4 is used. The separation of Fe(III) and Fe(II) can be achieved using 0.6 mg L-1 NaBH4. The flotation- determination method was carried out at pH 2-3. The formation constant is 1.3×107 L mol-1 with molar absorptivity of 0.2×105 L mol-1 cm-1 and detection limit of 5×10-6 mol L-1. The effect of foreign ions is avoided using excess aluminon and 0.5 mg L-1 NaBH4. الملخص الملخص FLOTATION-SEPARATION AND SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF IRON(III) IN NATURAL WATERS, STEEL SAMPLES AND PHARMACEUTICAL FORMULATIONS USING 1-(3,4-DIHYDROXYBENZYLIDENE) THIOSEMICARBAZIDE A simple, sensitive and rapid flotation method has been proposed for the separation of Fe(III) using 1-(3,4-dihydroxybenzylidene)thiosemicarbazide (H3BTS) as a chelating agent and oleic acid (HOL) as a collector. To optimize the flotation procedure, pH solution; concentrations of Fe(III), surfactant and H3BTS; ionic strength; temperature and shaking time were studied. The influences of foreign ions on the recoveries and the determination of analyte ion were also examined. The Fe(III)-H3BTS system was floated quantitatively (~100%) under the recommended conditions. The use of H3BTS was successfully extended for the determination of Fe(III) spectrophotometrically at pH 7 and ? = 566 nm. The system obeys Beer’s low over the concentration range of 0.077-8.490 mg.L-1 with molar absorptivity of 0.16×104 L mol-1 cm-1. The detection limit (taken as three times the standard deviation of the reagent blank) is 0.069 mg L-1 Fe(III) and the relative standard deviation (n = 10) was 2.7%. The proposed determination procedure was satisfactory applied to the analysis of Fe(III) in natural waters, vitamins and reference steel samples.

الملخص الملخص A novel method for speciation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) and individual determination using Duolite C20 modified with active hydrazone Trivalent and hexavalent chromium have been successfully separated and estimated from different solutions using 1-(3,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde)-2-acetylpyridiniumchloride hydrazone (DAPCH) loaded on Duolite C20 in batch and column modes. The obtained modified resin [DAPCH-Duolite C20] was identified by C, H and N analyses and infrared spectra. The presence of multi-active chelating sites gives the ability for DAPCH to bind more chromium, Cr(III) by forming stable complex and chromate by forming ion pair molecule [H2DAPCHDuolite C20]2+[Cr2O7]2? (H2DAPCH-Duolite C20 is the protonated form in acidic medium). The extraction isotherms were measured at different pH. The pH was found to be the backbone for the separation procedure in which the Cr(VI) and Cr(III) ions are sorbed selectively from aqueous solution at pH 2 and 6, respectively. The sorbed ions can be eluted using different concentrations of HCl. The saturation sorption capacity (41.6 and 20.05 mg g?1), the preconcentration factor (150 and 200) and the detection limit (13.3 and 10.0 ppb) were calculated for Cr(III) and (VI). The loaded resin can be regenerated for at least 50 cycles. The utility of the modified resin was tested in aqueous samples and shows R.S.D. value of <4% reflecting its accuracy and reproducibility. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
